Innovation: stop® sound®

"Stopsound" is a novel bio-based, biodegradable plastic that absorbs vibrations, is naturally fire-retardant and heat-insulating, and uses up to eight times less energy in its production than similar conventional plastics. The sound-absorbing foam remains permanently elastic without plasticizers, solvents, or classified chemicals and can replace bitumen, PVC, or EPDM.

Jury statement

The main prize goes to a product that equally impressed all jury members. It is a biodegradable foam developed for a broad and important field of application – sound and thermal insulation. The material formulation is an in-house development and not based on conventional bioplastics. The formulation is a combination of proteins, polyol, water, starch, and a filler, from which no polymer has previously been produced, but which are used in food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical products. According to the material data sheet, the foam has, among other things, good flame resistance, low smoke development, and does not drip or fall off burning within 600 seconds. Furthermore, thanks to its raw materials, no toxic gases are released during combustion. The biodegradable, technical product is ready for series production and has passed numerous technical tests for use in vehicles, industry, and buildings. The winning product of the 2022 Biopolymer Innovation Award is called Stopsound and comes from the Belgian company Home Eos. We congratulate you on this promising development.
