2nd Prize BIOPOLYMER Award 2022

SachsenLeinen GmbH (Germany)

Innovation: FUSE HMP-Thermo UD-Tape

SachsenLeinen produces UD tapes for lightweight construction from natural fibers and biopolymers. Plastic tapes with unidirectional (UD) fibers are a proven method for specifically reinforcing components in the direction of the forces expected in practical use. Instead of reinforcing large areas of component walls, components can be manufactured with minimal material and weight, as well as comparatively thin walls – while maintaining maximum stability. Until now, glass fibers in a polypropylene matrix have been the favored material combination for this purpose. Unfortunately, there are currently few recycling options for these fibers. With hemp or flax fibers combined with biodegradable plastics, SachsenLeinen now has a game-changer in its portfolio that can be recycled and composted.

Jury statement

The fiber composite material can be manufactured and processed using established manufacturing technology. Among other things, the jury was impressed by the uniformity with which the fibers are integrated into the biopolymer matrix. This development also serves as a signal for many regions around the world that, like the Central German lignite mining region, have embarked on, or are planning to, the transformation from fossil-based to bio-based raw materials. Natural, regionally grown materials such as hemp or flax are combined with bioplastics in Markkleeberg to create high-tech products that can be recycled at the end of their useful life and given a second life as short-fiber-reinforced plastic before, depending on the selected plastic, even being recycled biologically at the end of their life cycle. The jury awarded this innovation second prize.
